January 2006 - 10U Continue Their Journey

At the beginning of this hockey year, 16 girls from varying parts of the Chicagoland area came together to make the Team Illinois 10U girls team. Their personalities soon became apparent. There are talkers, silent types, funny, goofy and serious and sometimes a few of those rolled into one girl. They have developed friendships with girls they would have never met, if not for being on the team. The girls have learned to respect each other and to be aware of their teammates in the locker room. The girls jump right in to help each other dress when someone is running late. They have become a tighter team.

December 18th, the girls versed the Crystal Lake 10U girl’s team at the United Center. It was a tight game in which they lost 2-1. The experience of walking behind the scenes, dressing in the locker rooms and lastly stepping onto the ice cannot be described. The girls were very excited to be there and all enjoyed the Blackhawk’s game after.

The girls played Winnetka #2 team on January 6th. At 10:06 in the first period, Erika Truschke fired one into the net, putting the girls ahead early on. Half way through the period, the girls were unable to convert a goal on a power play. Just prior to the end of the power play, Taylor Arenz is called for hooking and the period ends with the girls trying to keep the action in the zone with four nice saves by Emma Turbyville.

In the second period, the Winnetka goalie denied Cheyenne Tuttle’s shot on a nice pass from the corner by Ellen O’Malley and another nice shot on goal by Allie Granato. Winnetka is able to put 3 goals in, but could have been more, if not for the efforts of Turbyville. Third period, with 1:33 left, Truschke scores on the power play. Final score TI 2, Winnetka 3.

The girls played the Falcons on January 7th. During the first period, Morgan Turner had a nice shot on goal, while Kami Weiner had several nice saves. With 3:34 left in the period, body checking is called on the Falcons, however, the girls are unable to capitalize on the power play. Nice press in the second period, with a pass from Ellen O’Malley to Amanda Conway, denied, but not to be the case later. The second period ends with the score TI 0, Falcons 3. Early into the 3rd period, O’Malley steals the puck from the Falcons and on a breakaway, scores the first goal. With 1:57 left in the period Maddie Hartman passes to Amanda Conway for another goal posting the final score TI 2, Falcons 5. The girls now prep for their tournament in West Bend, WI. Go TI 10U’s!
