14U#1 Play in Ohio Tourney Championship Game to Start Season
The 14U's began the 2004-2005 season with a strong
showing as they traveled to Cleveland Ohio the weekend of September 24
- 26, to participate in the IGNITE THE ICE Tournament sponsored by the
Ohio Flames. The 14's took second place in the early bird
tournament. The early season tune up pitted TI against MWEHL
teams VICTORY HONDA and the WISCONSIN WILD as well as other elite
teams. The early tournament allowed the 14s to develop as a team
on and off the ice prior to the rigorous schedule of the regular
season.
The 14U's, with only limited time on the ice together,
battled VICTORY HONDA, a fellow MWEHL team, in the opening round.
The game was marked by superb goal tending. TI net minder,
Erin Callahan would be called upon for the entire tournament as Kelly
Shutter missed the early season contests with a minor injury. Erin
Callahan turned back 30 shots in the opening contest and displayed
remarkable poise. TI pounded in 3 goals as the teams skated to a
3-3 deadlock.
The second contest of the tournament matched TI
against a very seasoned MICHIGAN CAPITALS team. The Capitals
could never get on track during this contest as the aggressive TI
defensive line up of Alyssa Spratte, Kathy Shei, Jackie Otto, Nicole
Camardo and Maggie Brennolt met the attackers early and kept the
Capitals top scorer from sustaining any offensive rush. TI lit the
scoring lamp with a pair from Ashley Motherwell, and Lauren Jones and
Nicole Germaine each adding to the tally. Erin Callahan was
solid in net, collecting her first shut-out of the year as TI rolled
to a 4-0 win.
The ROCHESTER EDGE was next on the slate as TI began
to get on the scoring drive. Lauren Jones racked up her first
Hat-Trick, while line mate Ashley Motherwell added 2 goals. Emma
Rambo assisted by Paige Hoppie and Erin Bradarich assisted by Jackie
Camardo each chipped in goals as TI skated to a 7-2 victory.
TI ended the seeding round in 1st place and would meet
the fellow MWEHL team, the WISCONSIN WILD, in the semi-finals. The
hard hitting physical game anticipated with the Wild never
materialized as the TI 14's took command of the game early and never
allowed the Wild to establish an offensive charge. Overall team
speed was once again with TI, as the 14's dominated both sides of
center ice. The overpowering offense of TI was once
again on display. Lauren Jones and Nicole Germaine led the
scoring with a pair of goals each, as line mate Ashley Motherwell
finished off the scoring for the line. Jessica Patrone and
Hayley Williams each got on the scorer's card with goals. Erin
Callahan turned back 23 shots as the TI 14's once again rolled to a
7-1 decisive win.
The Championship game matched TI against VICTORY HONDA
once again. The first game ended in a 3-3 deadlock. These
teams seemed evenly matched and outstanding goaltending by Victory
Honda kept the game close. Goals by Motherwell and Jones had the teams
deadlocked at 2-2 going into the final minutes of the game. A
power play goal by Victory Honda with 3 minutes left in the game
secured the win at 3-2.
