19U Show Up Big in First TI Hosted Showcase Weekend of the Season

Team Illinois hosted the first Showcase Weekend of the 2003-2004 season on October 17-19. Teams from the Midwest Elite Hockey League were in attendance representing Honeybaked, Ohio Flames, Minnesota Thoroughbreds, Little Caesar's, Wisconsin Wild, Madison Capitals, Michigan Capitals, Washington Pride, Colorado Select, and Shattuck St. Mary's.

In TI's first game Saturday morning, Honeybaked jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first period. In the second, TI began to regain their confidence. Honeybaked and TI exchanged goals, TI's coming on a power play. In the third period TI held Honeybaked scoreless while capitalizing on 2 power plays. In the end the 4-0 lead was too much to overcome with Honeybaked winning 5-3. TI goals came from Allie Morrow (2) and Sonja Novak, with assists provided by Courtney Bean, Rachel Crissy, Morrow, Samantha Ullrich, Kellye Stefanski and L. Wiedmeier. Shots on goal were Team Illinois 23 and Honeybaked 27.

Later Saturday night, Team Illinois bounced back from a tough first game loss and posted a 4-2 win over the Washington Pride. Whatever opening jitters the team had were long gone by the evening game. Crisp passing, puck control and solid defense determined the game. TI goals were scored by Novak, K. Stefanski, L. Wiedmeier and Jillian Kirchner with assists coming from Crissy, T. Wiedmeier. TI controlled the game with 27 shots on goal, while Elaine McKenna stopped 11 Washington shots.

Sunday's game was a rematch of TI and Washington Pride. Anticipating a Washington team that would be motivated to take the second game of the series, TI picked up from where they left off Saturday night. Capitalizing on Washington penalties, TI kept the pressure on never giving Washington a chance. TI scored 4 unanswered goals and wrapped up the weekend with a 4-0 win. TI goals came from Karen Levin, Kirchner, Ullrich and Lexie Kaknes. Assists were supplied by Bean, T. Wiedmeier, Morrow (2), and Levin. Again TI led in shots on goal with 19, while McKenna stopped 10 shots and registered a shutout.

The 19U team will play Culver the weekend of Nov 1st and another MWEHL weekend in Madison on November 7-9.
