State That Again!
Team Illinois 19Us took the momentum from their recent 4th place finish in
the MWEHL tournament to take on The Mission at the 2004 Blackhawk State Cup
Final. This was their only meeting of the year and the only time they've
met since last year's Blackhawk State Cup Final. The stands at the Edge were
packed as fans, family, friends and other Team Illinois teams came out to
cheer on the 19Us.
Mission opened with a goal in the first period and a score mid way through
the second. However, this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the TI 19Us nor
the fans in the stands. TI overcame these obstacles and others and struck in
the 2nd period with a wrap-around goal from Jill Kirchner assisted by Karen
Levin. Ending the 2nd it was Mission 2, TI 1. Going in the 3rd, Sonja Novak
scored at the 10:01 mark assisted by Rachel Crissy. TI then took the lead
on a goal by Jill Kirchner. Then Mission scored to drive the game into
overtime. For many of the players and parents this brought back memories.
At the 2:00 mark Kirchner skated into the Mission zone, took a shoot on
goal, got the rebound and fed Olivia Antognoli open at the point. Olivia
took the shot and the rest was history. For the second time in two straight
years Antognoli scored the winning goal against Mission in overtime. TI
won the 2003-2004 Blackhawk Cup by a score of 4 to 3.
